Tools for pros.

A complete list of apps used by Blake Sound.¹

This extensive list labels independent assignments commonly assigned to individuals who focus on that one specific skill.  More often than usual, Blake covers over 50% of the unified tasks on smaller projects such as commercial advertisements, indie films, and games.

Digital audio workstations

These are the tools that bring the sound to picture.  From the first steps of sound production to the final delivery of the product, these workstations are at the core of any audio production.

Reaper

The next generation of digital audio workstations that is pushing the limits of yesterday’s standards.  REAPER (Rapid Environment for Audio Production, Engineering, and Recording) acts as a host to most industry-standard plug-in formats (such as VST and AU) and can import all commonly used media formats, including video.  It is proves that the phrase ‘industry standard’ does not necessarily mean better.

Pro Tools HD

The industry standard.   It operates both as standalone software and in conjunction with a range of external analog-to-digital converters and PCIe cards with on-board digital signal processors (DSP). The DSP is used to provide additional processing power to the host computer for processing real-time effects, such as reverb, equalization, and compression and to obtain lower latency audio performance.  Like all digital audio workstation software, Pro Tools can perform the functions of a multitrack tape recorder and a mixing console along with additional features that can only be performed in the digital domain, such as non-linear and non-destructive editing (most of the audio handling is done without overwriting the source files), track compositing with multiple playlists, time compression and expansion, pitch shifting, and faster-than-real-time mixdown.

DaVinci Resolve (Fairlight)

Fairlight is the world’s first and only audio post-production software that’s completely integrated with picture editing.  Moving between sound editing and picture editing is seamless.  Fairlight is very powerful and extremely fast for professionals working on massive projects with over a thousand tracks.  Professional tools are provided for recording, editing, mixing, dialog replacement, sound clean up and repair, equalization, dynamics processing, and mastering soundtracks in all standard formats from stereo and surround sound up to the most recent  immersive 3D audio formats.

Logic Pro

Only available in macOS.  Logic Pro provides software instruments, audio effects and recording facilities for music synthesis and is mostly used for music production.  Although it is used by some in audio post-production, it is not common to be used by professional sound mixers, but rather music composers.

Gaming app audio assembly

The audio production of games requires many individual parts.  Just like there are game designers, character designers, animators, and composers, sound design has a specific pipeline in of itself.  A know how of coding is beneficial for this type of sound design.  Not to mention, unlike film, most gaming sounds require a more unrealistic feel.

Unity

Particularly popular for iOS and Android mobile game development and used for games such as Pokémon Go, Monument Valley, Cuphead, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Beat Saber.  Unity is easy to use for beginner developers and popular among indie game developers.  The engine can be used to create three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) games, as well as interactive simulations and other experiences.  The engine has also been adopted by many industries outside video gaming, including film.  The creation of 2D and 3D audio is also available by utilizing audio components.

Unreal Engine

Unreal Engine features a high degree of portability, supporting a wide range of desktop, mobile, console and virtual reality platforms.  It is popular among PC and console games with high graphics capabilities and is used for numerous games, as well as finding further use in the film industry.  Unreal contains a powerful audio engine was first launched with Fortnite and was later added to Unreal Engine 4.24.  Since its initial release, the Audio Mixer has continued to evolve its legacy feature set, and has added next-generation audio rendering features that provide unprecedented control and flexibility to audio designers working on real-time experiences.

Blender

Free, open-source 3D production suite used for making real-time interactive content. The Blender Game Engine uses a system of graphical "logic bricks" (a combination of "sensors", "controllers" and "actuators") to control the movement and display of objects. The game engine can also be extended via a set of Python bindings.  Graphical logic editor for defining interactive behavior without programming.  Playback of games and interactive 3D content without compiling or preprocessing.  Audio is also used via the SDL toolkit.

Uncommon tools for audio

In rare circumstances assistance is needed within the applications of 2D or 3D artists.  It is on these unique occasions that Blake Sound is available to assist.  Below is a list of apps, that although are excellent in what they specialize in, are not necessarily considered professional audio tools, yet implement audio in their workflow.

Adobe Premiere Pro

High resolution video editing at up to 8K resolution at up to 32 bits per channel color, in both RGB and YUV.  Audio sample-level editing, VST audio plug-in support, and 5.1 surround sound mixing are also available.  Premiere Pro's plug-in architecture enables it to import and export formats beyond those supported by QuickTime or DirectShow, supporting a wide variety of video and audio file formats and codecs on both MacOS and Windows. When used with CineForm's Neo line of plug-ins, it supports 3D editing with the ability to view 3D material using 2D monitors, while making individual left and right eye adjustments.

Final Cut Pro

Final Cut has long since regained initially missing pro-level features including multicam editing, XML importing, and external monitor support. It’s capabilities include a powerful 3D titling and an impressive Flow transition to smooth out jump cuts. Rich support for 360-degree VR content, updated color grading tools, and support for HDR and HEVC (High Efficiency Video Codec, aka H.265) arrived in version 10.4, along with added capabilities, stability, and fixes.

Adobe After Effects

Adobe After Effects (Ae) is a digital visual effects, motion graphics, and compositing application and used in the post-production process of film making, video games and television production. Among other things, After Effects can be used for keying, tracking, compositing, and animation.  Although sound design and mixing is not recommended to be used in Ae, adjustments can be made within in the case of some projects.

Cinema 4D

Cinema 4D (C4D) is a professional 3D modeling, animation, simulation and rendering software solution. It’s a  fast, powerful, flexible and stable toolset make 3D workflows more accessible and efficient for design, motion graphics, VFX, AR/MR/VR, game development and all types of visualization professionals. C4D is widely recognized as one of the easiest and most accessible 3D packages to learn and use.  As with Adobe After Effects, sound design and mixing is not recommended to be used within C4D, adjustments can be made in the case of some projects.

Windows 10 21H1 x64

The most recent update of Windows 10 was made on August 2021.  An upgrade to Windows 11 will not be made due to a number of applications that do not yet fully support Windows 11.

MacOS 10.12.6-10.15

MacOS changes on a yearly basis, but there are a number of applications that cannot keep up with the consistency of upgrades and do not support above 10.15 at the moment.  Also, until the necessary programs conform with the new Apple M1 processors, the central processing units will continue to be Intel Processors.

Some projects may require a separate studio or equipment rental based on the size of the production.  As of 2022, BlakeSound Studios is now strictly focused on audio production in REAPER due to its powerful and fast capabilities.  Pro-Tools is still an option, nevertheless not the default Digital Audio Workstation used in BlakeSound Studios anymore due to the lack of technical support from the AVID Corporation.
